Teacher Mental Health in Your School: An Essential Audit Tool

Many thanks to the redoubtable Steve Waters for his kind permission to reproduce this essential and comprehensive mental health audit tool for your school.

The current teacher recruitment and retention crisis, is in large part also the story of the failure to deal with the mental and workload stresses on teachers. Steve’s audit tool is very timely as it reflects, perhaps for the first time, that issues of mental health in the teacher force are being recognised as being a serious hindrance to school effectiveness.

The statements and column headings may give many leadership teams both food for thought, and some guilt that they have not put measures in place before now to support their staff.

It is to be hoped that less stigma will be attached to teacher burnout and mental health issues and that support and development programmes are put in place to be more pro-active in managing this issue before it impacts on teachers or the quality of education enjoyed by students.

Steve is CEO at Teach Well Alliance and is the ‘go to guy’ for matters of staff wellbeing. Read more of his work at:
