Capitalism has at its heart the idea of markets and consumers, of enterprise designed to deliver profit.
However, there is a fatal flaw in the capitalist model in that you cannot continue to have exponential growth in a world of finite resources.
We need new ways forward which balance the needs of the economy with the needs of people. If we don’t find this way soon then, like a cancer, capitalism will continue to ravish the planet to provide goods that we don’t need so that a smaller and smaller group of exceptionally rich people can profit at the expense of others.
We need to explore the future in schools and ensure young people have the resources, skills, attitudes and behaviours to meet future challenges in new and sustainable ways. There is little enough time left to change direction.
The passage is taken from Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig
