I am conscious that language teaching has had sparse coverage in the blog to date and thought I would go some way to redress that balance…
The importance of accurate communication is paramount, but there seems to be an increased pace at which language is changing and developing.
This is a natural process of linguistic evolution, words do not stay the same over time and language use evolves. Much to the chagrin of colleagues I used to argue that the US version of words which came originally from English showed the way in terms of generally adopting simpler and more phonetically simple spellings of works such as color, labor, center, neighbor, donut and program, where the spelling reflects the phonetic sound and redundant letters are ruthlessly omitted!
However, there are some linguistic anomalies which do not represent natural evolution, but are simply wrong!
These infographics represent some of the key spelling and usage errors that infuriate teachers and editors alike. Do not attempt to read this whilst operating machinery: an accident will assuredly occur…
